Life in Athens - SSN Fraud
This is a two part blog today.
Part 1 - Life in Athens
First and foremost... hello from beautiful down town Athens. I am blogging live from my new apartment, beautiful Baldwin Village. Its actually not so bad. Those of you who saw the pcis will remember I have the end apartment, so I have a bit more room than I should. Everything is moved in now, except for some books, and I have slowly gone about making this place home. This has also been a great adventure for me in terms of buying firsts of some things for myself.
Here's a short list:
A set of Good kitchen Knives.
A DVD Player.
Curtians.
Toaster.
Electric Can Opener.
Dishes (stoneware!)
Air Filters.
Pretty cool, hu? I moved up alot of my old furnature, bought some new stuff (new shelves, new printer table) and in general I am getting along well. I now have DSL (yay!), as well as a wireless router (yay!). Everything has been pretty damned cool... until I tried to get my cable hooked up.
Part 2 - Pissed off
So Ive been trying to get my cable hooked up for nearly a month now. Charter, the cable company up here, is a pain in the ass about NOT telling you when there is a problem. I called last week to finally get an apointment made for today. Of course, the guy was a no show. So I called back again this evening to find out why.
The apointment was never made because... someone else has Charter cable tv using MY Social Security Number. I'll give you a second to read that again. Yes, yours truely is a victim of a stolen SSN and maybe even Identity Theft.
So, other than having to go back to Atlanta tomorrow for my SSN card, I'm having to do the dance of the fraud fairies. I encourage everyone to take the next week and do the following, so that this does not happen to you in the future:
go to SSA.gov and order a copy of your Social Security Number Report
go to Equifax.com and call their number for a FREE credit report from them
If, hope not, but if, you find a problem, put a fraud alert out on your account. Hell, do it even if you DON'T find anything to keep the creditors out of your file witout your knowledge.
While this may be nothing, just some poor slob who put down random numbers to get his cable, I'm treating this like a big deal because... it IS a big deal. This bastard has used my SSN to get cable, and god knows what else. And I'm going to throw the fucking book at them when I get verificiation via my credit reports, yes sir.
The Ness is PISSED. I want my damned cable NOW.
