The loneliness of being German

The loneliness of being German

In striving to exorcise their past Germans have surrendered their ability to love themselves and their country. Perhaps this is why they envy Ireland - a country they see as having all the emotions they have lost. German-Irish novelist Hugo Hamilton on a people still in denial

Cool Things

Some fun and nifty stuff for the day, in leu of the depressing post I was going to make, but decided not to, since no one out there knows the people I would be talking about. If I catch you online, I might mention where I've been this weekend. Otherwise, its not a worry.

Today (19th) is National Talk Like a Pirate Day! Avast!
Jack: No. Not good. Stop. Not good. What are you doing? You've burned all the food, the shade, the RUM.
Elizabeth : Yes, the rum is gone.
Jack Sparrow : Why is the rum gone?
Elizabeth : One, because it is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels. Two, that signal is over a thousand feet high. The entire royal navy is out looking for me; do you really think that there is EVEN the slightest chance that they won't see it?
Jack Sparrow : But why is the rum gone?

Also, other interesting things for the day,
Der Fuehrer's Face, aka Donald Duck in Naziland, one of my favorite lost bits of Disney happiness lost to the, ahem, cleaning up of Disney. Video, and um, NSFW. This has finally be rereleased, for the first time since 1942, on DVD.

A Different Sort of Orchard

Hello, once again from Athens. I thought I should update everyone on how things are, since some of you are asking (grin).

Well... Athens is a strange strange place. I'm really not sure how well I fit in up here, in truth. It may be that I have yet to find the place where I belong on campus, but so far, I find myself really missing the comforts of GSU. For one.. there seems to be no Goth Tree. No one place where those I would hang out with would congrigate between classes, no pocket of smokers and drinkers dressed in black and leather. In fact, the whole school is ... very very preppy or hippy. It's very depressing in its way. Half these people wouldnt know a good beer if it bit them.

Too, I feel strangely out of place in the department. How gifted the GSU dept is to have people like Almeder, Kenny, and Woodhouse... and not be stoggy and close minded. Though I do say one thing - the precentage of female professors is much better here! 2 of three this semester! And one teaching German philosophers (^^).

Perhaps I will find the Goth Tree here, where the strange fruit (I'm sorry, bad bad bad) which I have as friends may be found to propigate in their own strain here.

Btw...

NASA Earned its budget for these pics as far as I'm concerned. How would you like to look out your window and see this ?
